Cortez: Because He Lives
April 28, 2011
THE lessons of the Holy Week may still be fresh in the minds of many. We remember the passion of the Lord Jesus. We recall his painful death on the cross, and we celebrate the joy of his resurrection. Yes, we thank God for the history and story of our salvation — one that did not end with Good Friday but proceeded to Easter Sunday and beyond.
Jesus suffered but he was able to overcome. He died but he rose again. He ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of God, only to come again as the King and Judge of the whole world.
The Easter message rings in the hearts of men through all the ages — “the victory of God over Satan, the triumph of good over evil, the dominance of light over darkness.” By suffering, Jesus obtained for us the fullness of life; by dying he provided the only acceptable and everlasting sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins; and by rising from the dead, he conquered death itself and opened the gates to eternal life in heaven.
By what Jesus did, he blest humanity with hope. True, we are living in an imperfect world with frustrations, disappointments, sadness, hardships and pain, but the good news is that all these sufferings are temporary. God, our loving Father, has prepared something better for us, believers. In the 14th chapter of John, Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many rooms, and I am going to prepare a place for you. And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am.” And where he is, is a place of perfection. “What no one ever saw or heard what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for his children” (1 Corinthians 2:9). In that place, “God will wipe away all tears in our eyes. There will be no more death, no more grief or crying or pain” (Revelations 21:4).
This hope also assures us that whatever tribulation we may pass through this world, we will, like Jesus, emerge as victors. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “Every test that you have experienced is the kind that normally comes to people. But God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.” We believe this, for as our Lord has said in the commissioning of his disciples, “I will always be with you until the end of age” (Matthew 28:20).
Let us thank the Lord for giving us this wonderful Easter season. Because he lives, we can face tomorrow.
