Cornas has graced the tables of the French aristocracy since the year 1000 A.D. Cornas consists of approximately 100 hectares of steep, terraced vineyards (not unlike those of Hermitage and Cote Rotie) planted exclusively to the syrah grape. From these vines a wine of uncanny strength is created; Cornas is arguably the most powerful expression of syrah in the entire world. To say the tannins in young Cornas are firm is an understatement. Its omnipresent framework is present throughout the palate. It has an aggressive attack. It finishes with muscle and persistence. Beneath this shell is a profound mix of black fruit, fresh herbs and earth. After thorough cellaring (perhaps seven to ten years) the wine’s skeleton softens and the multiplicity of flavors become more lucid. It will always remain a masculine wine, neither as sophisticated as Cote Rotie nor as lush as Hermitage. Its ruggedness notwithstanding, Cornas ends a meal like no other. Strong cheeses and aggressively sauced red meats find perfect harmony with mature examples. Additionally, it usually costs 30 – 50% less than Hermitage; few wines are as prone to be cellared in its price range.
