Cops arrest holdup duo

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The local police here over the weekend arrested two men while on the act of holding up a man collecting dues from his customers at Consunji Street in this city.
Superintendent Luisito Magnaye, city police chief, identified the suspects Arthur Nabong, 31, a security guard driving an armored van for a big commercial bank in the city; and Primitivo Torres, 29, a hardware helper. Both suspects are residents of Barangay Colgante in Apalit town.
Saved by alert operatives was Efren Lazaro, 54, a moneylender to vendors who conducts business in the city.
Magnaye told Mayor Oscar Rodriguez that the suspects were in the watchlist of police, along with other notorious groups victimizing hapless businessmen and folks in the city.
He said the suspects had been under surveillance for a week and upon arrest, admitted attempting to rob Lazaro of his collections estimated at P30,000. The victim had previously been robbed of some P100,000 by other unidentified suspects.
“Our operatives were on surveillance as early as 5 a.m. that day. Then we received information around 7:30 a.m. na may sinusundan at dinikitan nga itong mga suspects doon sa may Orchids Bookstore. When they announced the hold-up, our men immediately moved in para maiwasan pa ang manlaban sila dahil they were armed with a .45 caliber handgun and a kitchen knife,” Magnaye said.
The suspects admitted to police and Rodriguez that they did try to rob the victim and said it was their first hold-up attempt.
“May sakit po kasi ang anak ko at wala akong pambili ng gamot kaya naisipan ko iyon. Nanghihingi po ako ng tawad sa biktima at pasalamat sa pulis na hindi kami sinaktan,” Nabong said, adding he bought the gun from a friend residing in Kadwang Tete in Macabebe.
His cohort, Torres, said he was unemployed at the moment and decided to accompany Nabong in the hold-up attempt.
The suspects denied however, of having known and “pinpointed” the victim.
Magnaye said charges of illegal possession of firearms and attempted theft will be filed against the duo.
The victim meanwhile, thanked the police for foiling the attempt. He said the suspects poked a gun at his side as he alighted from his car to collect dues from his customers.
“Sabi nila ‘ibigay mo sa amin ang bag mo’ at pagkatapos nga po ay hinuli sila ng pulis,” he said.
Rodriguez, for his part, told the suspects that it was good they admitted to the crime.
“Masuwerte pa rin kayo dahil sa ating judicial system. Parating may pagkakataon para kayo ay magbago. Magsilbi sanang aral sa iba na may masamang balakin ang nangyari sa inyo,” he told Nabong and Torres.
And while commending the police for its accomplishment, Rodriguez directed Magnaye to exert more efforts to curb crime in the city.
