Comelec to decide next week on poll fraud probe

NEXT week, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will announce whether it will launch an investigation on poll fraud that supposedly took place in Maguindanao in 2007.
James Jimenez, Comelec spokesman, said the en banc might issue decision early next week.
“Siguro by next week, mga Monday or Tuesday, baka malaman na natin. Kasi patuloy naman ang pag-uusap ng mga abogado kay Bedol…kasi ayaw naman natin na madaliin kasi kapag minadali natin baka may ma-miss naman tayo,” he said.
Earlier this week, Comelec lawyers visited former Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol, who is currently detained at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Quezon City, to get more information regarding his poll fraud allegations.
Bedol is serving a six-month jail term imposed by the Comelec for his failure to produce election documents from Maguindanao after he illegally placed these in his custody in 2007. The documents have supposedly been lost.
Chairman Sixto Brillantes had said the Commission needs to review Bedol’s affidavits, as well as those who corroborate his claims, before deciding to conduct a formal preliminary investigation.
Meanwhile, Jimenez also expressed that former Comelec commissioner Virgilio Garcillano will be cooperating with the poll body’s investigation, although the latter already denied any knowledge on the alleged irregularities.
“We are hoping for cooperation definitely,” Jimenez said. “Hindi naman namin siya pinupunto na siya ang may kasalanan pero siya yung probably one of those in the best position to know kasi nga present naman siya doon and he was very active as a commissioner so he might be able to help.”
Garcillano was identified in an expose that broke out in 2005 about a taped conversation regarding the rigging of election results between him and then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. (FP/Sunnex)
