Cockpits now used as evacuation centers in Cotabato
June 23, 2011
SINCE evacuation centers in Cotabato city are now under water, cockpits in the area are now being used as temporary shelters by flood victims, a Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) official said.
Churches, gymasiums, and other evacuation centers have been flooded, so flood victims have been asked to stay in cockpits, Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive secretary of the CBCP-National Secretariat for Social Action Justice & Peace (CBCP-Nassa), said.
“It’s hard to find an evacuation center because most of the churches and gymnasiums are also in deep water,” he said in a forum in Intramuros, Manila.
Meanwhile, other traditional areas used for evacuation like schools, daycare centers, and barangay halls are currently providing shelter to other flood victims.
The CBCP official has also appealed for additional aid since food and other basic necessities are needed by the evacuees.
“That’s why we are appealing for aid. Help is badly needed because of the wide-ranging damage that the flooding brought to Cotabato,” he said.
Together with the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the Nassa is currently assessing the needs of different evacuation centers.
These include medicines, food, potable water, sleeping materials, cooking and kitchen utensils, tarpaulins for tents, mosquito nets, and hygiene kits, according to initial meetings with the local Social Action Center in Cotabato city.
More than 6,000 families out of the 25,000 families affected by the flooding in Cotabato are staying in evacuation centers based on the June 17 report of the Social Action in the Archdiocese of Cotabato.
Meanwhile, at least four dioceses — the Archdiocese of Jaro (Iloilo), Diocese of Surigao, Diocese of Marbel (South Cotabato), and the Prelature of Isabela de Basilan — have said they will conduct of a second cash collection during mass in their respective areas.
For its part, P100,000 is being sent by the Archdiocese of Manila, Caritas Manila for the flood victims.
“Ang pera ay nakalaan na pambili ng mga gamot at iba pang pangangailangan ng mga biktima ng kalamidad,” Caritas Manila, Disaster Management Program head Moresa Tolebas said. (FP/AMN/Sunnex)
