Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques Wine
Clos Saint-Jacques is a Premier Cru vineyard of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation in the Cote de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy. As such, wines made exclusively from grapes grown in the vineyard may claim the title Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, and include the Clos Saint-Jacques name as part of the appellation title on labels.
All Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru wines are red and made from Pinot Noir grapes. They are produced from about 200 acres (80 hectares) of Premier Cru land, divided up into twenty-six individual sites (or climats), of which Clos Saint-Jacques is one.
Clos Saint-Jacques is the most prestigious of Gevrey-Chambertin’s Premier Cru sites, and is widely considered to be of Grand Cru quality. When the classification of the village’s vineyards was made in the 1930′s a condition was introduced that all Grand Crus had to be adjacent to the prestigious Le Chambertin climat, meaning that Clos Saint-Jacques was passed over. The 16.5 acre (6.7 hectare) site is located immediately west of Gevrey-Chambertin village, on the mid-slope of the Cote d’Or.
