Cleansing the jails
Laudable was the scrutiny of a jail guard of the Pampanga Provincial Jail which led to the interception of illegal drugs attempted to be smuggled inside the prison cells by a “visitor”.
If all the prison guards and all prison supervisors were all the same, we are pretty much assured that our jails will not only disallow law offenders from skipping out of their cells but also prevent bad guys from breaching into their premises if only to conduct their nefarious activities.
Sadly, though, we are witness to the inefficiency of some prison officials and the penetration of illegal activities even in the correctional where bad elements should be serving time to pay for their offenses and not to further practice their trades.
In the past, many similar interceptions were made on peddlers posing as visitors. Some are usual visitors who are able to sneak in with illegal substance.
This latest incident only shows how ingenious drug offenders are in their “business.” Shabu was neatly tucked inside a toothpaste tube in an attempt to fool the jail guard that it was nothing but personal hygienic item. Fortunately, the guard was thinking one step ahead than the suspect.
While the incident should prompt the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology to recognize the commitment of the Pampanga Jail prison guard, it should also be a wake-up call for the bureau to alert all its officials and staff all throughout the country to raise their security measures. Inspections should go beyond the obvious since we do not expect drug peddlers coming in with a smoking “tooter” in their mouth.
