City to lead protest vs ruling on cityhood

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The City Government will lead the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) in its scheduled daily protest over the Supreme Court’s (SC) ruling on the cityhood of 16 towns.
The SC two weeks ago reversed its ruling last year — which was supposedly final and executory — on the cityhood of Mati, Davao Oriental; Naga, Cebu; Bogo, Cebu; Carcar, Cebu; Baybay, Leyte; Catbalogan, Samar; Tandag, Surigao del Sur; Lamitan, Basilan; Borongan, Samar; Tayabas, Quezon; Tabuk, Kalinga; Bayugan, Agusan del Sur; Batac, Ilocos Norte; Guihulngan, Negros Oriental; Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte; and El Salvador, Misamis Oriental.
City Chief of Staff Rowie Siron-Freeman on Monday said the City Government strongly condemns the “flip-flopping” of the SC.
“Madiin po nating tinutulan ang konbersyon ng 16 na munisipyong ito dahil hindi ito naaayon sa Local Government Code. Ang kanila pong income ay hindi umaabot sa P100M piso na itinakda ng batas. Kasama po nating tumututol sa illegal na gawaing ito [ng konbersyon] ang 122 siyudad sa buong bansa,” she said.
The LCP, led by this city Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, will troop to the SC on March 9 to formally file petitions drafted by the group’s National Executive Board last week, said Freeman.
She added the SC’s “flip-flopping” of “final decisions” with “entry of judgment” seems to have no end, having been done about three times, since the LCP’s November 18, 2008 petition, where the SC voted 6-5, declaring the cityhood laws as unconstitutional.
Freeman invited various sectors on a noise barrage at 12:30 p.m. every Friday and to wear black arm bands every Monday for a month to join the protest against the SC’s decision. (Jovi T. De Leon)
