City keen on boosting local film industry
May 27, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The establishment of a cinema house here that will feature culture and values-oriented Filipino films could boost the local film industry.
Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) chairman Briccio Santos and Mayor Oscar Rodriguez agreed that passing of an ordinance on showing Filipino films in cinemas around the city will boost the film industry.
During the press conference for the First Pampanga Film Festival at Heroes Hall, Santos said the establishment of a 150-seater cinematech, like the one being constructed in Baguio City, will help the local film industry rebound from its dwindling state and attain its objective of “cultural allocation.”
Santos cited the radical decline in the production of local films from 220 in 2007 to just 19 in 2011.
“The influx of Hollywood made films and the rise in fees and costs as well as the limited showing of local films in cinemas has greatly affected the industry,” he added.
Rodriguez, for his part, said he will look into the possibility of asking the City Council to pass an ordinance mandating cinemas here to schedule for local movies.
Meanwhile, the first Pampanga Film festival, the 4th leg of Sineng Pambansa, reeled off Thursday with screenings at the Heroes Hall Ninoy Aquino Amphitheater and Robinsons Starmills cinemas.
The film fest will also have free showings in Barangays Sindalan, San Pedro and Northville 14 via the FDCP’s mobile cinema van.
The May 26 to 28 film fest features 11 selected films — according to sensibilities — that include Higit sa Lahat, Red Shoes, Rosario, Noy, Sampaguita, Forever, Here Comes the Bride, Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag, Tirador, Sabungero, Bayaning 3rd World, Signos, Aliwan Paradise, Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo, Kahit Konting Pagtingin, Mano and Till We Meet Again.
Admission is free during the three-day film fest.
