Carpio-Morales takes oath as new Ombudsman

MANILA (Updated 1:46 p.m.) — Retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales took her oath of office as the new Ombudsman Wednesday.
President Benigno Aquino III administered Carpio-Morales’s oath in Malacañang at 1 p.m.
Vice President Jejomar Binay, former Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, Budget Secretary Butch Abad, Presidential Management Staff chief Julia Abad, and House justice committee chair Niel Tupas Jr. also witnessed the oath taking rite.
Aquino announced the appointment of Morales as the new Ombudsman during his second State of the Nation Address (Sona) last Monday.
Morales earlier said the first thing she will do when she assumes her post is to check on the status of cases under her office.
Aquino, meanwhile, has full confidence that Morales will be doing her function in pursuing corrupt officials.
Morales replaced Merceditas Gutierrez who resigned on April 29 amid threats of impeachment due to alleged inaction on cases involving former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Aquino believes that with Morales’s appointment, strong cases will be built up against the past administration.(Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
