Call to privatize Pagcor renewed amid P1B coffee purchases

MANILA — President Beningo Aquino III’s revelation during his second State of the Nation Address that the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) spent P1 billion for coffee only means one thing according to a lawmaker: “It’s time to move out”.
“Pagcor should be privatized. It’s time we move out… because the government has no business to participate in gambling… It should be the private sector that should run that (Pagcor),” Deputy Majority Leader and Marikina Representative Romero Frederico Quimbo said.
Aquino on Monday said his administration has uncovered anomalies committed by the previous administration under then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
“The truth is we have uncovered so many anomalies. In Pagcor, the previous management apparently spent one billion pesos on coffee alone. At one hundred pesos per cup, that would be ten million cups of coffee over the last several years. Where did all that coffee go? Who drank it? Perhaps, we can find the people who consumed all that coffee and ask if they have been able to sleep in the last few years,” he said.
Senator Franklin Drilon had earlier reiterated proposals to privatize Pagcor and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) after allegations of fund misuse were made by the new board members.
“I am calling for the immediate privatization of the operations of PSCO and Pagcor so that these allegations of misuse of funds and resources can be avoided,” Drilon said. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
