Boy dies after playing with firearm
April 27, 2011
CAMP OLIVAS — A six-year-old boy from Olongapo City died after accidentally shooting himself recently.
Police said John Swaze Flores, 6, mistook a real firearm for a toy gun when he and his mother visited a friend’s house in Barangay East Tapinac, Olongapo City.
Investigations disclosed that Flores and his mother, Ma. Patricia, went to the residence of a family friend identified as Mary Grace Macarasig in the said barangay.
According to reports, Flores and Macarasig were having a drinking spree with the latter’s boyfriend, Army Reservist Jay de Silva, 35.
At some point, De Silva asked Macarasig’s nine-year-old daughter, Vea Bianca, to get his mp3 player’s charger in his pouch upstairs.
It was learned that Vea, accompanied by the victim, found the pouch with the charger as well as a firearm. The girl left John inside the room, and after a few minutes, their parents heard a gunshot coming from the said room, and found John lying on the floor.
John sustained a wound on his head and was taken to the James L. Gordon Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead while undergoing a medical treatment.
The police recovered a .45 pistol with seven live ammunitions and a spent shell at the scene of incident.
A case of negligence resulting in homicide is being prepared in court against De Silva, who is currently in police custody. (Noelyn Tolentino)
