Bordeaux 2010 Vintage Update
april 20,2011
In recent years, Bordeaux has taken hyperbole to the limit.
First we had the hype surrounding the Millennium vintage, 2000.
Then we had 2005, with its stories of vignerons in tears as the grapes came in, such was the quality of the “vintage of the decade.”
The 2009 vintage perhaps outstripped them all, with a level of interest in many respects unprecedented.
Well guess what? With the grapes picked, 2010 is shaping up to be a very good vintage indeed. Which is good news or bad news depending on your view of these things.
This morning I caught up with Alexandre Thienpont, winemaker and part owner of Pomerol estate Vieux Chateau Certan, who described quality levels as very promising. He said he expected it to be an excellent vintage for the whole of Bordeaux.
Speaking in London, Mr. Thienpont said in Pomerol the vintage is characterized by high alcohol levels, high tannins and a low yield. The wines will be big and will be for enjoying at the end of the meal with a cigar, as opposed to drinking throughout a meal, he said. He compared 2010 to 1950, in that it is a very small production and a vintage dominated by merlot. “The big factor in 2010 is that the tannins are very, very present compared with 2009, which is much more supple and easy to approach. For Vieux Chateau Certan, 2010 is much more of a Cabernet Franc year compared with 2009, which is more merlot based. Climatically the conditions were very close to 2005, I am sure 2010 will be an excellent vintage for all of Bordeaux.”
With prices rising by more than 70% in certain cases for the 2009 vintage, it remains to be seen whether the market can sustain another premium vintage in Bordeaux.
Bargain hunters may have to wait until 2011 for the prices to fall again.
