ANGELES CITY — International pop star Allan Pineda, popularly known as apl.de.ap of the Grammy Award-winning group Black Eyed Peas, has fulfilled his promise to his townmates in Barangay Sapangbato here.
He launched on Tuesday a music library and a computer laboratory at the Holy Angel University (HAU) and at the Sapangbato National High School (SNHS) where he attended before migrating to the United States.
apl.de.ap, who was born and raised in Pampanga before an American family adopted and took him to the US when he was 14, initiated the project out of his vision to provide students in his hometown easier access to information technology.
His project was supported by Hewlett-Packard (HP) Philippines and Ayala Foundation Inc.
According to the singer-performer, the music library and studio at HAU would be furnished with musical instruments, interactive software programs, and various other materials designed to make learning music more dynamic and engaging for university students.
At his former high school in Sapangbato, he said the library and the com
puter laboratory will be equipped with 18 desktop PCs which were donated by HP.
“With computers, you can do anything. I want them to have access to information, and also as Black Eyed Peas, we use music programs through computers. I’m grateful to HP for making it happen and giving the chance of technology to other people,” apl.de.ap said.
The facilities would help raise the academic achievement levels of student and address the high dropout rates in the school, especially among Aetas in the community.
For his part, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan lauded apl.de.ap for his efforts of not forgetting his roots.
“You haven’t forgotten where you came from,” Pamintuan told apl.de.ap. Just like apl.de.ap, Pamintuan has helped students in Sapangbato by way of hiring SNHS graduates in the City Government.
apl.de.ap met for the first time 15 of his scholars, all freshmen at the HAU. The scholars finished at the top of their class at SNHS.
“It is important to give back, and given the opportunity, I would do the same thing (all over again),” he said. “What goes around comes around.”
The singer has always been proud of his roots. His songs deal with Philippine culture and the country itself. He added that he likes coming back to the Philippines because of his countrymen’s warmth that keeps him grounded.
