Bishops to return vehicles to sweepstakes office

MANILA (Updated 10:44 a.m.) — Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Quevedo on Wednesday said the bishops will turn over the luxury vehicles to the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).
During a Senate hearing on the alleged PCSO fund mess, Quevedo, citing a letter from the bishops, said whether it is constitutional or unconstitutional, they are returning all the vehicles.
“Vehicles in Mindanao (are) ready for immediate turnover to duly authorized PCSO official. Those given to Luzon are outside the Senate,” he said.
Quevedo maintained the sports utility vehicles (SUVs) were received to reach far-flung areas to help the poor in time of calamities.
He expressed sadness that their sincere desire to help the poor has “disturbed and even scandalized” the Catholics.
He, however, assured the Senate they will cooperate with the investigation as long as it sticks to the facts.
Butuan Bishop Juan De Dios Pueblos, who was also present in the hearing, said he has asked a person in Butuan to return his Montero to PCSO at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday).
Pueblos admitted he wrote former President Gloria Arroyo, requesting for a 4×4 vehicle, which also served as birthday gift.
He said he did not feel that it was improper to ask for a 4×4 vehicle in 2009 as “there was really a need to go to far-flung areas,” adding service to the public motivated him to seek the assistance of government.
“My letter to former President Arroyo was a lapse in judgment; despite my intentions, my actions have been misconstrued.”
On Monday, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) assured that the bishops’ acquisition of vehicles from the sweepstakes office was done in good faith.
The CBCP asked the public slow down in judging and to conscientiously seek the whole truth behind the controversy as it conducts its investigation into the controversy.
It also said the bishops involved in the controversy are ready to face consequences if proven that their receiving of luxury vehicles was unlawful, anomalous, and unconstitutional. (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
