Bishop worried over moves to change Charter

A BISHOP is apprehensive over moves to amend the Constitution, saying that the changes — as proposed by a Senate and a House leader — might go beyond economic provisions.
This was the sentiment expressed by Bishop Broderick Pabillo, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)-National Secretariat for Social Action, Justice and Peace (Nassa) Chairman.

“Why not just amend that part (economic provisions) and not call anymore for a Charter change?” asked Pabillo.
For his part, CBCP–Public Affairs Committee Chairman Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez also echoed his concerns.
“Let us follow what reasons they will put up and then weigh their relevance to the society,” said Iñiguez in a text message.
On Thursday, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte both agreed to begin “exploratory talks” for the possibility of amending the 1987 Constitution.
The congressional leaders, however, stressed that the changes to be proposed would be limited only to the law’s economic provisions.
For his part, Cotabato Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo is inclined to support Constitutional amendments as long as these will be limited to changing economic provisions.
“I favor it but only on specific agreed upon issues such as the economic provisions… if not, then we should just go by the existing amendments process in Congress,” said Bagaforo in a separate interview.
