Binay reminds Filipinos to decline strangers’ requests

VICE President Jejomar Binay reiterated his appeal to Filipinos who visit other countries to ignore promises of money from drug syndicates and decline requests from strangers.
Binay, who is also the Presidential Adviser on Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) Concerns, issued the appeal after another Filipina was arrested by Indonesian authorities upon her arrival from Malaysia for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than a kilogram of heroin last week.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the woman was allegedly paid $8,000 to carry the drugs to Indonesia, where drug trafficking is punishable by death. The Filipina was nabbed at the Adi Sumarmo Airport in Central Java.
“Nakikiusap po ako sa ating mga kababayan na nagbabalak magdala ng droga sa ibang bansa. Huwag po tayong masilaw sa pera at kayamanan. Bitay po ang parusa kapag nahuli kayo (I’m appealing to my fellow Filipinos to resist the temptation of earning big when smuggling drugs because execution is the prize when caught)” Binay said after attending the wake of Sally Ordinario-Villanueva in Echague, Isabela province.
Ordinario-Villanueva is one of the three OFWs executed in China last month for drug smuggling. The others are Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain.
The Vice President said the government does not condone drug trafficking but stressed Ordinario-Villanueva’s case is different as she was misled by her recruiter into carrying the drugs to China in 2008.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) earlier said they have strong evidence against Ordinario-Villanueva’s recruiter, Tita Cacayan, who is also facing a string of criminal charges in Isabela.
Cacayan has already requested protective custody from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after receiving death threats following the execution of Ordinario-Villanueva. (AH/Sunnex)
