Binay: 3,000 people respond to Marcos burial poll

April 30, 2011

MORE than 3,000 responses have been received by a survey that asked respondents their opinions about a proposal to bury the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
This was announced Friday by Vice President Jejomar Binay, who has been tasked to make a decision whether or not the former President deserves to be buried at the Philippines’ national heroes’ cemetery.
After being launched last April 15, 3,115 replies have been received, of which 2,139 were sent through text message and 976 were through email, the Office of the Vice President said.
He added his office is still waiting for the official positions of the registered political parties, civic groups and people’s organizations. Commentaries published in newspapers have also been included.
At the same time, Binay welcomed the participation of the public, saying that it has provided insights on the issue.
“We are interested in getting the people’s opinion on the issue, not to count how many agreed or disagreed. We do not tally how many voted yes or no. The survey is intended to get the people’s sentiments so we could formulate and give the best recommendation to President Aquino,” he said.
“We want to take into account the views of all sectors and groups. We want to encourage people participation in decision-making,” he added.
Binay said he hopes to conclude the survey and submit his recommendation to President Aquino next month even as he added that the public can still send their reactions and comments via e-mail to blog@ovp.gov.ph or text through 0926-7468212 (for Globe subscribers) and 0949-6295575 (for Smart subscribers).
Binay has been tasked by President Benigno Aquino III last month to study the contentious issue after a resolution authored by Sorsogon Representative Salvador Escudero urged Aquino to allow Marcos to be buried at the Libingan, an honor given to fallen soldiers and other deceased former presidents.
Some 218 congressmen have already affixed their signatures in support of the resolution, but Binay apparently now has the final say.
Under the rules, those allowed to be buried at the Libingan are military personnel who died in the line of duty or were honorably discharged from the service, Filipino war veterans, former presidents, dignitaries, statesmen and National Artists.
The remains of widows of former Philippine presidents, secretaries of national defense and Armed Forces chiefs of staff are also authorized to be interred in the same plot where their husbands are buried.
Malacañang has consistently kept its distance on the issue, with the President saying that any decision coming from him may be interpreted as biased since he is the son of the late opposition leader, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino and former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino, who toppled and ended Marcos’s 20-year regime following the 1986 People Power Revolution.
Ninoy was assassinated at the Manila International Airport on August 23, 1983 as he was returning from exile. The airport was later renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in his honor.
Marcos’ family renewed his call for a hero’s burial after former Armed Forces chief Angelo Reyes was buried at the Libingan despite being hounded by corruption charges, which forced him to commit suicide. (AH/Sunnex)
