Benguet hosts 6th organic congress

THE Cordillera Organic Agriculture Development Council Inc. (COADCI) is currently holding its 6th congress at the La Trinidad municipal gym.
With the theme, “Sustaining Organic Farming Interventions towards Vibrant Cordillera,” the congress is participated by the officials, representatives and members of COADCI, and other organic practitioners coming from different provinces of the region.

The congress highlights updates, accomplishments, and assessments on the practice of organic agriculture in the region. It was also meant to discuss contents of Republic Act (RA) 10068, or the Philippine Organic Agriculture Act of 2010.
Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Executive Director Marilyn Sta. Catalina said the congress will provide the opportunity to consult and assess the advocacies of organic farming in the region to be able to attain further support from DA.
She added the congress shows the region’s undertakings for the implementation of safe farming, which may also address the problem on climate change and global warming.
“This 6th congress notifies the benefits of organic farming for the past first five years not only to practitioners but most likely to consumers,” said Sta. Catalina.
She said DA supports the advocacies of COADCI since organic product consumption is economical than health medications.
COADCI Chairman Marcelo Abela said the council, with more or less 200 members, was founded in Benguet after observing the province is the heaviest user of pesticides that result in environmental degradation and health problems.
The council’s primary aim is to convince more conventional farmers to shift to organic farming and prove the region, particularly Benguet, grows healthy products.
“By organic farming, we will preserve traditional farming which started by our forefathers who lived longer lives due to organic product consumption,” said Abela.
