Ateneo overwhelms La Salle for twice-to-beat bonus

MANILA — Defending champion Ateneo de Manila bucked a wobbly first half to send archrival De La Salle University back to earth, 79-62, in the 74th UAAP men’s basketball tournament Sunday.
Brimming with confidence, the win also put Ateneo ahead of the eight-team pack after keeping an immaculate record of 11-0 while notching the first twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four.
“We don’t just rely on one player just like what we did in the past. We’re a very balanced team,” said seventh-year mentor Norman Black.
Holding on to a five-point advantage, the Blue Eagles easily leaned on veteran bench scorer Tonino Gonzaga and power forward Nico Salva to make it an 11-point bubble at the end of third quarter, 53-42.
And the Green Archers struggled from there as they only managed to cut the deficit to just seven points in the payoff period, courtesy of back-to-back shots from Bicolano guard Almond Vosotros, 53-46, with 9:04 remaining.
Gonzaga, a former Blue Eaglet standout, drained eight of his season-high 12 points in the second half, while Salva registered a game-best 19 markers on a 9-of-18 shooting.
La Salle has never won a game in the second round of the eliminations, after bowing to second-running Adamson (8-3), University of Santo Tomas (6-5), and cellar-dweller University of the East (2-9) in the last two weeks.
Rookie sensation Kiefer Ravena, who never finished with a single digit since his scoreless debut against Adamson last month, dropped 13 points for Ateneo.
La Salle’s Fil-German center Arnold Van Opstal had 13 points while Vosotros and Jarelan Tampus combined for 18 points. The Archers joined National University in the fifth and sixth spots for an identical 4-7 slate.
Organizers put the gate attendance at 14, 229, not even enough to fill the Araneta Coliseum’s capacity of 16,000. In their first face off last July 26, nearly 15,500 fans trooped to the Big Dome, where the Eagles also prevailed, 81-72.
Sighted during the two-hour match are politicians, celebrities and high government officials which include Chief Justice Renato Corona, Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, Philippine Stock Exchange chairman Jose Pardo, US Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr., San Miguel Corp. chairman Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr., Randy Santiago and Gerald Anderson.
While lady luck seemed to be not on the side of La Salle, its fiercest rival in the 1990s firmed up its chances for a Final Four appearance.
UST, which ruled the cage wars from 1994-1996 at the expense of La Salle, tripped ousted UE, 54-45.
Cameroonian standout Karim Abdul dictated the Tigers offense with 16 points, backed up with 13 rebounds and two steals.
