Ateneo bags UAAP cagefest crown

MANILA — Playing like there’s no tomorrow, the Ateneo de Manila University completed Saturday a historical four-peat feat after beating Far Eastern University in the 74th UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
In a huge follow-up to their Game 1 demolition, the Blue Eagles overpowered the Tamaraws in the rainy clincher match, 82-69, before the 18,423 fans at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Coming up with virtuous performance were Finals MVP Nico Salva, who finished with 15 points to go with five rebounds and two assists, and Rookie of the Year Kiefer Ravena, who topscored for the Eagles with 18 points and six boards.

The championship crown was a fitting parting gift for American Kirk Long, Emman Monfort, and Bacon Austria, who all drilled in 14 markers to frustrate the Tamaraws.
From a close first half, the Eagles unleashed 22 big points in the third canto as opposed to FEU’s nine to pull away. Ateneo even padded the lead to 19, 74-55, with only 4:12 remaining, courtesy of Salva’s floater.
The Tamaraws, who dictated the first 20 minutes in Game 1 last September 24, saw themselves in a scoring drought as backcourt lieutenants RR Garcia, Terrence Romeo and Cris Tolomia all fumbled in despair in the last two frames.

FEU only managed to post a two-point lead several times in the first half but Ateneo just played with so much gusto to snatch the lead again.
And Ateneo’s mentor Norman Black couldn’t just be happier.
After all, his talented squad finally joined the elite cast of UAAP teams that registered four straight crowns or more, namely: La Salle (1998-2001), University of Santo Tomas (1993-1996), and University of the East (1965-1971).
It was also Ateneo’s seventh overall crown since joining the league in 1978.
“It feels great to win a fourth championship but I think the key here is that you have good young players and good veterans. I want them to be known as a good team because people will respect you for that,”Black said. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
