Arroyo can choose to treat condition at home: doctor

INSTEAD of seeking medical treatment abroad, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo can choose to stay at home to treat her hypoparathyroidism but using a different method.
Arroyo’s condition can be treated using a non-surgical procedure called a radio isotope scan, the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) Board of Governor for Manila Dr. Leo Olarte said on Monday.
“In my personal opinion, option lang yung bone biopsy. Pwede naming hindi siya i-bone biopsy. Marami naman tayong radio isotope scan that can take the place of the bone biopsy,” said Olarte. “Ang (bone) biopsy, o-operahan ka. Itong radio isotope scan, walang operation.”
Arroyo had been seeking approval to travel abroad to cure her illness using a bone biopsy procedure that is currently not available in the country.
In a separate statement sent late Sunday night, Olarte disputed claims made by the Arroyo camp saying the country does not have medical experts that can competently handle Arroyo’s bone problem.
It is not up for Arroyo and her camp to declare whether there are doctors that can handle Arroyo’s medical problem or not.
“The camp of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo cannot use the alleged absence of an expert in Metabolic Bone diseases in the Philippines or the perceived absence of any medical or hospital facility to treat her hypoparathyroidism, to prosper her intentions to seek medical treatment abroad, since we all have the competence and facilities to treat her metabolic bone disease, in the Philippines,” said Olarte.
However, the PMA official emphasized that they are not opposing her move to travel abroad for medical treatment.
As of now, Arroyo still has all the right to seek treatment abroad.
“Legally and ethically speaking, as a patient, it is the former President’s inherent right, to choose her physician of trust and confidence, wherever that physician is,” said the orthopedic surgeon.
“Furthermore, it is also her Constitutional Right as a Filipino Citizen to travel, wherever she wants to, except however, if there is a legal restraint or prohibition from a competent court of law, after due process of law has been observed,” added Olarte. (AMN/Sunnex)
