Arayat conducts mass circumcision

ARAYAT — The local government unit here has started a series of mass circumcisions involving 1,000 young boys from its different barangays as part of Mayor Chito Espino’s social service program.
Espino told Sun.Star Pampanga on Monday that his administration is targeting a total of 1,500 kids to benefit from “Operation Tuli”, saying that as of Tuesday, 20 of the 30 barangays have already availed of the free surgeries.
He said the program started last May 19 at the Rural Health Unit 1 where 500 children were circumcised, while another 500 children also availed of the free surgery on May 23 (Monday) at the RHU 3 in Barangay Camba.
The mayor said that on May 25, an additional 500 youngsters are expected to be circumcised at the RHU-2 in Barangay Bitas, just in time for the opening of classes next month.
“This is part of our administration’s municipality-wide program, to assist indigent constituents who could not afford to bring their sons to a private doctor or hospital because of lacking of finances,” Espino said.
He said that through the harmonious relationship between the executive and the legislative headed by Vice Mayor Larry Trinidad, the LGU has set aside funds for the purchase of medicines and surgical equipment needed to perform minor surgical operations.
Espino said barangay chairmen led by Liga ng mga Barangay president Julio Espino were tasked to screen indigent families, adding that each barangay was given a minimum of 50 slots for project.
The surgeries were performed by municipal and RHU doctors and nurses assisted by medical staff and Barangay Health Workers.
Vice Mayor Trinidad said that aside from “Operation Tuli,” the LGU also conducted a medical and dental mission in four of the 30 barangays, saying the monthly activity aims to serve all the barangays.
He said an estimated 4,000 individuals mostly indigent women and children have already benefited from the medical and dental mission.
“As we can see, the local government through the leadership of our mayor is doing its part in promoting basic health services, that is why we (Municipal Council members) have always been supportive of his plans and projects,” Trinidad said. (Chris Navarro)
