Aquino vows to triple efforts for Arroyo’s prosecution
UNFAZED by criticisms, President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday pledged to become even more aggressive in making former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo accountable for her alleged wrongdoings.
Aquino said he is not afraid of tripling efforts to run after former officials suspected of high-level graft.
“Nitong mga huling araw, naglipana na naman po ang mga walang katuturang patutsada at mga kuwentong barbero laban sa atin. Masyado daw tayong agresibo sa paghabol sa mga tiwali’t nagkasala. Ang sagot ko sa kanila: kung gaano sila ka-agresibo sa pagkakamal ng salapi ng taumbayan noon, magiging triple ang pagharurot natin para panagutin sila ngayon,” he said in his speech during the 75th anniversary of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
“Handa akong gawin ito dahil nasa panig ko ang katwiran at katotohanan, at higit sa lahat, ang taumbayan. Sila ang nagbigay sa atin ng pagkakataong paglingkuran ang ating bayan, kaya sila lamang ang pinag-kakautangan natin ng loob: wala nang iba,” he added.
The Chief Executive said no one should be above the law and those who committed wrongdoings should be held accountable regardless of their status in life.
“Samakatuwid, basurero ka man o dating Pangulo; drayber ka man o mahistrado; kapag inagrabyado mo ang sambayanang Pilipino, dapat lamang na habulin at panagutin ka sa iyong mga atraso,” he said.
Arroyo was arrested last week due to electoral sabotage charges filed by the Commission on Elections in connection with the alleged rigging during the 2007 mid-term elections.
Arroyo’s camp denounced the Aquino administration for allegedly “railroading” the charges against the lawmaker, who attempted but failed to go abroad to seek medical treatment.
The Aquino administration said more cases will be filed against the former President.

In line with the 75th anniversary of the NBI, Aquino honored the several distinguished personnel and officials on the agency.
The President, assisted by NBI Director Magtanggol Gatdula and Justice Secretary Leila De Lima, presented plaques and awards representing the NBI-Program on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence (NBI PRAISE) to 22 officials and employees of the NBI for exemplary performance dutiful diligence to their work.

In his speech, the President lauded the awardees and the officials and employees of the NBI for their dedication and selfless sacrifice, saying the he and the nation are grateful for their work.
