Aquino vows more, better weapons for military

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III on Monday committed to help newly installed Armed Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Jessie Dellosa in fighting the insurgency by providing more weapons and quality combat gear to the military.
In his speech during the turnover rites at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, President Aquino said he is confident that Dellosa will continue reforms and honest leadership left by Lieutenant General Eduardo Oban Jr., who officially retired from office Tuesday as he reached mandatory age of 56.
“Kay Lieutenant General Dellosa: huwag mong tatalikuran ang mandato mo sa taumbayan. Isabuhay mo ang katapangan, integridad, at katapatan sa bansa upang mapanghawakan mo ang iyong sinumpaang tungkulin sa bandila,” Aquino said.
He assured Dellosa that the administration is behind him, particularly in the military’s battle against local insurgency and the dispute in the West Philippine Sea.
Quality equipment and combat gear will be provided to the military through the Modernization and Capability Upgrade Program, Aquino said.
Skills of government troops will also be upgraded through education and training programs, Aquino said. This will allow soldiers to become familiar with the military technology of other modern countries.
He reiterated that soldiers will be given sufficient benefits, including housing and educational support, especially for children of slain and wounded soldiers.
In his speech, Dellosa upheld the President’s goal of an all-out justice and not an all-out war against rebels in Mindanao.
As someone who saw action on the country’s second-largest island, Dellosa said war only leads to destruction, adding “it is time to give peace a genuine chance” in the Aquino administration.
He also vowed to upgrade the military’s naval and air defense capabilities.
He said his term will focus on four aspects, namely territorial defense, disaster preparedness, AFP internal peace and security plans, and organizational reforms.
Meanwhile, Aquino lauded Oban for reforms he instituted in the military in his nine months in service, including efforts to weed out corruption in the Armed Forces.
“We have succeeded in restoring the values of integrity and honesty in the Armed Forces…Every soldier reeled painfully under these false accusations and strived to remove every vestige of corruption in our ranks,” Oban said in his speech.
The military chief was also proud to say that he is retiring without any “pabaon” or cash gift, a system that purportedly became a practice during the Arroyo administration.
Dellosa, a former aide-de-camp to the late former President Corazon Aquino, is a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Matapat” Class of 1979.
Prior to his appointment, he was the commander of the Northern Luzon Command.
He was born on January 20, 1957 in Bacon, Sorsogon and is married to Mary Rose Fernandez with whom he has three children. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
