Aquino to interview only 2 nominees for next Ombud

NOT all four nominees for the Office of the Ombudsman post will be interviewed by President Benigno Aquino III.
Aquino said he might include only two nominees in his “own shortlist,” refusing to name both.
He added that he still has to inform the other two that they are no longer in the running to become the next Ombudsman.
“I haven’t met them. I’ll be meeting probably not all of them. Probably at the maximum three but chances are just two in my own shortlist of those nominated by the JBC (Judicial and Bar Council),” Aquino said in an ambush interview in Roxas City in Capiz.
He said the appointment group was the one who sets the schedule for the interview.
The President has to choose a replacement for resigned Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez on or before August 4.
Included in the shortlist submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) to the President are former Supreme Court Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales, Justice Undersecretary Leah Armamento, former Justice Secretary Artemio Tuquero, and Presidential Commission on Good Government Commissioner Gerard Mosquera.
Carpio-Morales is believed to be favored by the President as she was the one who administered Aquino’s oath of office last year.
Tuquero, meanwhile, is said to be being lobbied by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa and Senator Francis Escudero who are both members of the Samar group.
The so-called Samar group supported Aquino and Vice President Jejomar Binay tandem in the May 10, 2010 elections.
However, Ochoa denied rooting for Tuquero.
Tuquero served as Justice secretary during the administration of former President Joseph Estrada. He is a member of politically influential Iglesia ni Cristo.
Carpio-Morales and Armamento also got support from the Ombudsman Employees Association (Ombea), which prefers another lady anti-graft chief.
Ombea said a lady Ombudsman has a “sentimental softness” toward rank and file employees. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
