Aquino spokesman ends word war with massacre lawyer

PRESIDENTIAL spokesman Edwin Lacierda on Thursday dismissed lawyer Harry Roque’s call for him to quit his post as he was allegedly involved in Zaldy Ampatuan’s plan to turn into a state witness in the Maguindanao massacre case.
Speaking in a press briefing in Malacanang, Lacierda said he will end his word war with Roque, “who is seeking publicity more than the truth.”
“His 15 minutes of infamy are up. I will not engage him anymore,” he said, adding that he refuses to recognize Roque’s call for him to resign.
“Syempre hind kung hindi ko na siya papatulan, papakinggan ko pa ba siya?” the Palace official said.
He also said that he has no plan to file libel case against Roque due to his unpleasant statements.
Roque earlier accused the so-called “Balay” faction in the Aquino government for pushing Zaldy to become state witness in the gruesome case that killed at least 57 people, including 32 media practitioners.
The Balay faction is so named for the “Balay Puti” election campaign group of the President and his running mate and now Transport Secretary Manuel Roxas. The group’s supposed rival is the Samar group which in turn is headed by allies of Vice President Jojo Binay.
Lacierda earlier said that Malacanang is assessing and studying the testimonies of Zaldy and it is open to tap the suspended governor if necessary.
Lacierda reiterated that the Aquino administration still supports and sympathizes with the families of the victims of the Maguindanao massacre.
He noted that President Benigno Aquino III’s loyalty to the victims will be upheld as he meets with some of the victims’ families and Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu in Malacanang.
“They will like to seek assurance from the President and to seek assurance from the President that he is with them,” he said.
