Aquino plays it safe on de Lima’s fate in Chief Justice race
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III did not give a categorical answer when asked Thursday if Justice Secretary Leila de Lima is someone he would consider for the vacant Chief Justice post.
Aquino told reporters in Pasay City that he will wait for the shortlist to be submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) before making a decision.

“Well, it is hard to answer because I still don’t have the list from the JBC,” Aquino said.
“By the Constitution, I can only choose from the list that JBC has submitted. So if I say I want someone, it might be construed that I am interfering with the JBC. If I don’t answer, you will say I still don’t have someone in mind. I think there is no correct answer to that question,” he added.
Aquino earlier said that although de Lima is qualified for the Chief Justice post, he prefers the Justice Secretary to remain in his Cabinet.
He declined to say if his initial preference on de Lima still stands pending the result of the screening and interview process of the JBC.
“That becomes a possibility if a name exists on the list to be submitted by the JBC,” he said.
De Lima’s acceptance of her nomination drew mixed reactions from lawmakers and various groups.
Some said she still lacks experience while others recognized her determination, which is needed to enforce reforms in the judiciary.
Several members of the Church also doubts if de Lima could serve independently in the Supreme Court citing her ties with the Aquino administration.
The Chief Justice post was vacated following the ouster of Renato Corona last May due to culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust.
Aquino has 90 days to look for the replacement of Corona.
The JBC will start the screening process for the 24 candidates for the CJ post on July 24.
