Aquino orders probe into Compostela Valley landslide

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III has ordered an investigation on Friday’s landslide in Compostela Valley that killed eight persons and left 16 others missing.
“The President has already tasked [Environment Secretary Ramon] Paje, the DENR [Department of Environment and Natural Resources], to conduct an investigation after the rescue efforts are done to see what did go wrong,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a press briefing in Malacanang on Monday.
Paje has also been tasked by the President to lead the rescue efforts in the landslide that took place at Kingking village in Pantukan town of gold-rich Compostela Valley province.
Latest reports said the death toll rose to eight as two more bodies dead bodies were recovered. Thirteen people have been rescued, while 16 are still missing.
Valte said the government’s main concern is still search and rescue operations.
She added that Paje has been constantly updating President Aquino and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo on the development on the rescue efforts.
The spokesperson also emphasized stricter implementation of regulations covering small and big scale mining following reports that several miners have defied suspension of small-scale mining in the area of Pantukan.
“They need to follow the regulation imposed by the DENR…The regulations are there not for the sake of having regulations but the regulations are there to save lives. Safety is always paramount in this particular issue, so everybody needs to get on board for the stricter implementation of the regulations,” she stressed.
She said following regulations is the only way to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.
When asked if the DENR should also be held liable for being lenient in their duty, Valte said: “I think I am not in a position to make that judgment based on a single incident.” (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
