Aquino hails veterans, soldiers on National Heroes’ Day

N CELEBRATION of National Heroes’ Day, President Benigno Aquino III on Monday lauded veterans and soldiers who have served the country and have helped the administration pursue its advocacies.
During brief ceremonial rites at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, Aquino thanked veterans for their continuing love of country by setting examples of bravery and public service.
In return, he said the government through the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, accredited almost 300 hospitals to attend to the medical needs of veterans.”Maraming salamat po sa ating mga beterano na kaagapay ng ating gobyerno sa pagtahak sa tuwid na daan. Hindi na lang po kayo ang nakatutok sa kapakanan ng bansa, nasa likod na po ninyo ang gobyerno upang alalayan kayo at tugunan ang mga kakulangan sa natatanggap ninyong serbisyo,” he said.
The President also noted the efforts of the soldiers in defending the country despite lack of modern equipment and facilities.
“Para naman po sa ating mga sundalo sa kasalukuyan, salamat sa inyong kahandaang ipagtanggol ang ating teritoryo at ang mga Pilipino. Sa matagal na panahon, ipinamalas ninyo ang di-matatawarang kabayanihan na panatilihin ang kapayapaan sa kabila ng maraming kakulangan na nararanasan ng inyong hanay,” he said.
Aquino also reiterated the government’s plan to upgrade the Armed Forces’ defense capabilities. Part of the enhancement includes the recent acquisition of newly-refurbished warship that will be used to patrol the country’s territories in the West Philippine Sea.
Aquino said he wanted the capabilities of the Filipino soldiers to be recognized not only in the country but in the entire world.
Facing the tombs of thousands of soldiers at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, he thanked them for sacrificing their lives to defend the country.
“Saludo po ako sa mga sundalong nagbuwis ng buhay at inilaan ang kanilang panahon at pagod sa pagsisilbi sa bayan. Sa pagtitipon natin ngayon, karapat-dapat lang nating ipagdiinan at ipagtaasan ang kanilang kabayanihan,” he said.
“Sa mga sandaling kinailangan ng ating bayan ang mga tagapagtanggol ng kalayaan at kapayapaan, hindi sila nag-atubiling magbuwis ng buhay. Hinubog nila ang kasaysayan upang may maipamanang matiwasay at payapang komunidad sa mga susunod na henerasyon. Salamat po sa inyong tapat na pagtupad sa sinumpaang tungkulin,” he added.
The President then urged the public to continue to support the government in its campaign against poverty and corruption.
He emphasized the need for “bayanihan” to solve the country’s problems.
“Hindi po kailangan ng bansa ang isang superman para maresolba ang lahat ng problema natin. Ang kailangan po natin ay bayanihan nina Juan at Juana dela Cruz. Kailangan natin ng mga nakikilahok sa solusyon ng mga problema,” he said.
He said he ready to defend the country but he could not do it on his own and needs the help of every Filipino.
“Nananalaytay sa ating dugo ang kabayanihan ng ating mga ninuno. Tiwala po ako sa kakayahan ng bawat isang Pilipino na makatulong sa pag-asenso ng ating bansa,” he said.
“Hindi na natin kailangan pang magbuwis ng buhay o magpadanak ng dugo para lamang maging bayani. Ang kailangan lang natin ay ang wagas at bukal na pagtulong sa kapwa Pilipino,” he added.
The president noted that simple ways such as obeying traffic rules and helping and caring for other people could be considered as heroism.
August is one of the most memorable months for the President.
He said the National Heroes Day is apt to be remembered during this month as many historical moments took place in August including the death of his parents, democracy icons Ninoy and Cory, the ‘Unang Sigaw ng Himagsikan’, and the end of World War II. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
