Aquino assures media freedom to broadcasters

CLARK FREEPORT — President Benigno Aquino III assured members of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) that his administration will not curtail media freedom in the country, noting that the press will continue to become the guardian of Philippine democracy.
However, the President stressed that “such freedom should be accompanied with responsibility.”
Aquino encouraged the broadcast media to intensify its efforts to eradicate the “rotten tomatoes” in their industry that extort money in exchange of a good headline, alter the facts to favor a few and disseminate gossips to divert the attention of the public from the truth.
Aquino served as the guest of honor during the opening rites of the 37th Top Level Management Conference (TLMC) of the KBP in Clark Freeport on Wednesday.
TLMC 2011 features plenary sessions, which are anchored on the theme “On Air, On Target for Social Transformation in a Digital Age.”
Up for discussion in the conference are: The Goals of Philippine Social Transformation and What Broadcasters can do to help achieve them, HD Radio Technology: Status and Opportunities, Philippine Economic Outlook and Prospects for Inclusive Growth, Radio Report: How Today’s Audience See the Radio, Advertising Perspective: Radio’s Role in the Digital Media Environment, Push Radio-Changing the Way Radio Works, How Radio Broadcasters can benefit from Social Media, Radio Automation, Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB), and Composite Technology Inc.
Aside from plenary sessions, the latest technologies in broadcasting are also showcased via an exhibit. Confab attendees are likewise set to vote for their group’s next set of Board of Trustees and Officers.
KBP is composed of owners and operators of radio and television stations as regular members, and the radio and television stations themselves as associate members.
KBP was organized to elevate professional and ethical standards and promote social responsibility in broadcasting, as well as to work for the advancement of the broadcast industry and protect the rights and interests of broadcasters.
To achieve these aims and purposes, the KBP implements several programs and projects such as enforcement of a code of conduct for broadcast stations, radio research projects, liaison with government agencies and other organizations, implementation of technical standards for broadcast stations, public service campaigns on radio and TV, awards for excellence, accreditation of announcers and more.
