Angeles, Olongapo to train on Infant Young Child Feeding
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—The cities of Angeles and Olongapo, along with eight selected municipalities each for Zambales and Pampanga, will be trained in the Infant Young Child Feeding this November.
Victoria Manez, National Nutrition Council (NNC) Regional Program Coordinator in Central Luzon, disclosed that the training will be slated from November 14-21 for Zambales, while November 21-28 for Pampanga wherein municipal and city nutrition action officers will be attending.
Likewise, IYCF in Aurora covering towns of Baler, San Luis, Dipaculao, Dilasag, Dinalungan, Dingalan, Maria Aurora, and Casiguran had been successfully trained in the barangay roll-out trainings this month.
“We are targeting by the year 2013, all provinces in Central Luzon will be covered including Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Bataan, and Zambales,” she added.
IYCF, which is aimed to improve the nutritional status and health of children especially under three years old and consequently reduce infant and under five years old mortality, is intended to improve, protect and promote infant and young child feeding practices, increase political commitment and ensure its sustainability, disclosed Manez.
Latest data showed by the NNC revealed that the prevalence of undernourished children, 0-5 years old or 0-60 months in Region 3 says the percentage of underweight is 15.8 percent; stunted, 22.2 percent, and wasted, 6.9 percent.
Underweights reflect “wasting” or low birth weight and acute weight loss or stunting in children thus increasing mortality risk.
“Such IYCF training will help prevent the risks of the children in malnutrition,” Manez concluded.
