Angeles City gov’t to assist in drug users rehab
ANGELES CITY –The local government here vowed to help 19 drug-dependents from barangays Amsic and Sta. Teresita who voluntarily submitted themselves to the authorities on Friday at the Angeles City Police Office (ACPO) Station 2.
After the regular flag raising ceremony rites at the Angeles City Hall this Monday, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan expressed his appreciation for this initiative made by the citizens.
According to him, this is a good manifestation of the people’s trust towards the programs and projects of the local government which counter the proliferation of illegal drugs in the city.
“This act is a good sign that we can work together to make Angeles a ‘drug-free city’. I salute these people who made a bold move to change for the better. They can expect that the local government will continue to support and help them by providing assistance through the Angeles City Anti-Drug Abuse Council’s (ACADAC) programs,” Pamintuan explained.
He also mentioned that helping these drug dependents do not end in rehabilitation alone. Work opportunities, quality and affordable education and health services are being offered by the local government to help them improve the quality of their life totally eliminating the possibility of returning to their lives as substance abusers.
The ACADAC also expressed their gratitude to all the drug users who made this courageous act of voluntary surrender.
According to ACADAC head Anna Liza Suller, the ceremonial surrender of these drug users is in line with the mayor’s contract with the Angeleños.
“This is a sign that our policemen, the local government and these Angeleños who voluntarily surrendered themselves are working hand in hand for the betterment of city,” she added.
She also commended Angeles City Police Office (ACPO) and all the barangay officials who helped in the success of the turn-over. She said that this breakthrough is a good example for the other barangays.
“Angeleños today are confident with how the government is working towards maintaining peace and harmony in the city, that is why they entrusted themselves to us. Gaining the trust of these people won’t be possible without the hardwork and efforts of our mayor,” she affirmed.
Chief Inspector Marciano Bañola of the ACPO Station 2 explained that with the coordination and cooperation of the barangay officials, they have been conducting dialogues with these people, encouraging them to surrender.
“With the positive effect of creating dialogues to these people, the frequency of raids and brutal arrests of drug elements will be lessened, as the people will surrender themselves to us and allow us to help them,” he noted.
He also mentioned that they will continue making these dialogues with other barangays. ●Charlene A. Cayabyab
