Angeles City conducts cleanliness drive

December 07, 2010

ANGELES CITY – City officials led by Acting Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting yesterday spearheaded a clean-up drive along Santo Rosario and Santo Entierro Streets.

Dubbed as “Agyu Tamu Clean Up Drive 2010,” the cleanliness drive started after the flag raising ceremony at the Museo ning Angeles.

Cabigting said the activity is aimed at clearing the city streets with trash like candy wrappers, cigarette butts, plastics, straws and gums.

“Masipag la reng kawani ning gubyernu,” said Vega-Cabigting before the drive, adding that the city is serious about the matter.

Even with the absence of Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, who is in London to attend an anti-human trafficking summit with Councilor Maricel Morales, Cabigting said her office continuously works to make the city a better and cleaner city.

The City Planning and Development Office designated all the city offices and departments a place along the stretch of Santo Rosario Street and some parts of Santo Entierro Street to clean.

Green trash bins were provided by the General Services Office and City Engineer’s Office, which were funded by the department heads to pick up the garbage that the cleaners swept.

Acting City Vice Mayor Jericho Aguas and Councilor Alfie Bonifacio and barangay officials were also present during the clean-up activity.

As the city aims to be a prime tourist spot in Central Luzon and even in the whole Philippines, the clean-up drive is a valuable contribution to the cause, its officials said.

In October, Pamintuan issued Executive Order No. 31, “creating the anti-littering task force under the Office of the Mayor,” stressing that environmental management and protection is one of his administration’s priority program outlined in his eight-point agenda.

“Among the illegal acts being committed daily are littering, dumping and throwing of garbage or any kind of waste in open or public places,” the mayor said.

Pamintuan added that public and private establishments should maintain the cleanliness of their frontages and immediate surroundings.

The Anti-Littering Law prohibits acts like littering, illegal dumping, illegal disposal of garbage, urinating, defecating, spitting in a public place or as simple as throwing candy wrappers and cigarettes.

“We’re just hoping that the public will soon realize that throwing even a candy wrapper or a cigarette butt into the streets is a serious offense and will not in any way be tolerated in the city,” Pamituan said.

Pamintuan created the task force to directly oversee the city government’s cleanliness drive program and the enforcement of the city’s anti-littering ordinance including the apprehension of and issuance of appropriate citations to violators. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
