Airline group eyes Clark aviation potential

CLARK FREEPORT — Various airlines with local and international flights in the country have started to set their sights on the potential of the aviation complex here as its airport gears up to become the Philippines’ premier gateway.
The 48-member Airline Operators Council (AOC) on Thursday inspected the facilities at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA), including the newly built terminal with two passenger bridges and tubes.
This has opened possibilities for more local and international flights here.
AOC chairperson Lourdes Reyes said they are regularly visiting DMIA because the airport is the main alternate airport next to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
The AOC members were impressed about the development plans of the Clark International Airport on the 2,300-hectare aviation complex.
“It seems good for international airlines,” Reyes said.
During a forum at the CIAC office, she, however, raised issues including the availability of aircraft fuel supply and transportation.
But CIAC president Victor Jose Luciano assured of sufficient fuel supply saying they are going to establish a fuel farm inside the aviation complex.
On the transportation issue, Luciano said a City Air Terminal will be established in Quezon City so that passengers coming from Metro Manila can go directly to the Clark airport.
The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has set aside funds for the city air terminal project, according to Luciano.
Bus companies have already vowed to provide additional buses for routes leading to DMIA, he added.
Luciano even disclosed that CIAC will offer incentives to airlines.
“We want you to take a look again at Clark,” Luciano told the AOC members.
The airline group also brought up with Luciano the airport closure at NAIA when its repair starts on January next year.
The operation of the airport will be affected as it closes from 12:30 to 5:30 a.m. for about five to six months.
Luciano said the DMIA is working with NAIA to address situations like this, impending airport closure in Manila.
When asked if DMIA can handle massive arrival of aircraft, Luciano said CIAC is open to accept companies with expertise on ground-handling.
Luciano also bared plans to implement a twin airport system. He said that DMIA will complement the operations of NAIA.
With this, a high-speed rail will be constructed to make a link between the two airports.
Luciano even said that CIAC is planning to build a budget terminal to accommodate low-cost carriers that selected Clark as their hub.
He said the construction of the terminal, with a capacity of 10 million passengers per year, will start by the end of 2011.
Among the budget airlines include Asiana Airline, AirAsia Berhad, Tiger/SeAir, Cebu Pacific, Jin Air, and others.
