Agri office bats for P50-M seed assistance for farmers

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Agriculture (DA) has allocated P50 million as seed assistance to palay farmers affected by the recent flooding in Central Luzon.
DA Regional Director Andrew Villacorta said the funding now only awaits the approval of the DA secretary.
Villacorta said he has instructed agricultural officials here to start the rehabilitation works by getting seed assistance from the DA’s buffer stocks.
“Provincial and municipal agriculturists should now have master lists from their respective areas to facilitate the rehabilitation works and so that they would have an idea of how many farmers would be given the seed assistance,” Villacorta said.
Villacorta added, however, that while the DA will be giving seed assistance, this will exclude fertilizers.
He said farmers who would like to plant in the next cropping season may opt to get their seed assistance before then.
Despite of the damages here, Villacorta said farmers here can still catch up on the cropping season.
He said only 15 percent of the total farming area in Central Luzon has been affected by the flooding and would not have a very adverse effect on rice supply in the region.
In the final Damage Report of the DA, some 60,706.25 hectares of palay fields have been affected by the flooding in Bataan (4,876.15 hectares), Bulacan (3,086.75), Nueva Ecija (19,024.20), Pampanga (16,385), Tarlac (13,705.50), and Zambales (3,628.65).
The total and final estimated damage on palay crops is at P260,063,923.66.
