28th Araw ng Kagitingan Ultra-Marathon, Another tribute run for World War II vets
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Running aficionados will again honor the Philippines’ World War II veterans this coming April 8 and 9, 2013, by retracing the infamous 1942 Death March Trail in the Central Luzon region, thru a non-competitive relay-run.
Dubbed the 28th Araw ng Kagitingan Ultra-Marathon (A Tribute To World War II Veterans), the non-competitive, 114-kilometer run, will start at the event’s Kilometer Post 0 Marker in Mariveles, Bataan with Mariveles Mayor Jesse Concepcion and the living war heroes, headed by Post Commander Abe Regala joining the simple program.
After the opening rites and a few meters of “Walk with the Heroes” portion, Regala will light the symbolic torch and transfer it to event founding organizer Ed Paez of the San Fernando Runners Unlimited, Inc. (SAFER RUN), that will signal the start of the two-day run.
Runners from SAFER RUN, Philippine Army Special Services Unit, Caloocan North Runners Club, Sta. Rosa City Runners, Runners Plus and Tarlac City Team will be traversing a city and eight towns of Bataan before spending the night at the Lubao, Pampanga Gym, where Gov. Lilia Pineda, Mayor Mylyn Cayabyab and his brother, former mayor Dennis Pineda will roll the traditional red carpet.
Early morning of April 9, the group will cover the road to Guagua and then Mayor Jomar Hizon’s town of Bacolor, where the modern-day marchers will do their annual Visita Iglesia at San Guillermo Church.
The yearly vow of the runners in saluting the heroism of the Bataan Patriots is backed by MILO, UNILAB Active Health, MAYO Productions, Inc., POCARI Sweat, MAGNOLIA Health Tea, EXCELLENT Noodles, PAMPANGA’S BEST, PCSO, Hotel Victoria de San Fernando, ALICE Bakery & Grocery, SPEED Detergent, F.M. Ringor Engineering/AdEvents, WESCOR Transformer, Isport BOTAK, BFAR Gitnang Luzon, PNP RO3 and others.
The Bataan-Pampanga phase will end at Barangay Sto. Niño Death March Shrine Km. Post 102 marker, where City of San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodriguez will usher a program specially for the War Patriots headed by District Commander Avelino Domingo.
After the rites, the runners will board their back-up vehicles to Sto. Domingo, Capas, Tarlac, where they will start the remaining 12-kilometer run route to Capas National Park (Camp O’Donnell), where the two-day run will end, for the final rites. ●
