2 members of carnap gang slain in shootout
CAMP OLIVAS — An alleged leader of a carnapping gang and his cohort were killed by policemen during a running gun battle along the national highway in Barangay Pansinao, Candaba town last Monday.
Senior Superintendent Edgardo Tinio, Pampanga police provincial director, identified the slain suspects as Romeo Guinto, alias Bong Guinto, alleged leader of the Guinto Carnapping Group, and his cohort Joey dela Cruz, both residents of Barangay Candading, Arayat town.
Tinio said while conducting a checkpoint in Barangay Pasig, Candaba, police flagged two unidentified men riding on two motorcycles for verification purposes.
The two drivers, Guinto and Dela Cruz, ignored the policemen and instead sped away towards Barangay Pansinao, which prompted policemen to pursue the suspects until their motorcycles slid on a ditch along a road in Barangay Pansinao.
Tinio said the suspects drew a .38 caliber revolver and an improvised shotgun, and fired towards the police.
The police team returned fire, hitting the two in different parts of their bodies.
Both suspects were taken to a nearby hospital but were declared dead on arrival by attending doctors.
The slain suspects were allegedly engaged in carnapping, illegal drugs, robbery, extortion and gun-for-hire operations in Pampanga, Bulacan and Angeles City, police said.
The cadavers were transferred to a funeral parlor in Arayat town for autopsy but the immediate relatives who identified the suspects refused the process. (With Ric Sapnu)
