2 Cebu grads make it to teachers’ board exams’ top 10

CEBU CITY — In taking any endeavor, prayers should be on top of everything.
This was the common answer by Cebu Normal University (CNU) fresh graduates Noremay Boncales Perez and Sharah May Dahan Caga, when asked what preparation they made for the recent Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).
Both topped the board exam. Perez ranked fifth, while Caga was eighth in the elementary category among the 47,000 graduates who took the LET examination last September 25.
“Kung wala ko mo-graduate sa CNU, dili siguro ko mag top (If I didn’t graduate from CNU, I wouldn’t have topped the exams). Because the training in CNU is very rewarding,” said Perez, who, like Boncales, holds a degree in Elementary Education major in General Education.
Perez and Caga graduated cum laude.
“Of course, you should do a lot of reading and studying, but praying should be the most consistent of all,” said Caga.
Things in common
Aside from being the only topnotch students from Cebu, Perez and Caga share a lot of things in common.
Both of them are from Bohol. Perez hails from Trinidad, while Caga is from Bien Unido, Bohol.
Both are also devoted Iglesia ni Kristo members. The two are also the youngest in their family.
Perez is the only girl in their family. Her older brother was an engineering graduate, while the other is taking up Criminology.
She said they were raised having a simple life. Her parents are farmers.
Back when she was in high school, she always wanted to teach, thinking it would be a fulfilling career.
While she was preparing for the LET exam, she said she was busy working as a teacher in St. Dominic Savio in Cordova. That meant she would have time to study only at night.
“From the day I started my review, I decided to have a devotional prayer every morning,” said Perez.
Prayers
Perez added that every 6 a.m., she would wake up early and go to an Iglesia ni Kristo church and pray that she would pass the exam.
Last Thursday, Perez received a text message from one of her classmates congratulating her for passing the LET exam.
“At first, I didn’t believe it. Until I checked on the Net and saw my name on top,” said Perez.
She said the first person she informed was the security guard of the school where she was working.
“I was the only one in the room, so I went outside and told the security guard in our school to express how delighted I am with the result,” she added.
Caga, on the other hand, said Perez told her.
“Honestly, wala pa gyud ko ka-check sa akong name sa Net (Until now, I have yet to check my name on the Internet). Maybe I’ll have to check it later. I was just relying on all the congratulations I received na nakapasar lagi ko (that I really passed),” Caga told Sun.Star Cebu Friday.
Like Perez, Caga also would give a “devotional prayer” in their church every afternoon, which she believed helped her pass the exam.
Caga said she wanted to be a Medical Technology student, but she was influenced by her parents who were both teachers in Bohol.
Her father was also the school principal of Bien Unido Academy, where she graduated from high school.
Caga is now a kindergarten teacher in South Hills International School in Banawa, Cebu City.
“I felt that it’s very wonderful to be a teacher. Like me, I teach kindergarten. Inig sulod nila dili pa sila kahibaw mubasa ((When they attend class, they don’t know how to read), but after our class kahibaw na sila mubasa (They now know how to read) because I taught them,” said Caga.
Incentives
The Department of Education in CNU will give Perez and Caga P10,000 as a reward for topping the exam.
CNU faculty members described Perez as the shy type, while Caga is the interactive one.
“Both of them are very intelligent. You can actually sense that in how they talk kay naa gyuy (because there really is) sense,” said Isabelo Genegaboas, one of their teachers.
Dr. Filomena Dayagbil, College of Teacher Education dean, said they are proud of Perez and Caga.
“I am so proud of them because they will serve as role models here in our school, that everything could be possible if you will be serious in your studies,” said Dayagbil.
Perez’s advice to those who will be taking the next LET exam is to study and pray harder and to always aim for the top.
“If grabe imung effort (If your effort is great), I know you will be rewarded,” said Perez.
Caga, for her part, said one should practice time management.
“Just have faith that you can do everything,” said Caga. (Sun.Star Cebu)
