12 killed, 5 hurt in military-bandit clash
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Soldiers attacked al Qaeda-linked militants at an encampment in the island province of Basilan on Thursday, and eight government troops and four rebels were killed in the fighting, the military said.
Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang, Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) spokesman, said the clash took place around 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the village of Upper Cabengbeng, Sumisip town, Basilan.

Cabangbang said identities of the slain and wounded soldiers from the 11th Scout Ranger Company of the Army’s 4th Scout Ranger Battalion are yet to be confirmed.

Army Major General Ricardo Rainier Cruz said government forces struck in the morning after the military pinpointed an encampment of Abu Sayyaf militants blamed for past attacks in Basilan Island’s Sumisip township.
Sporadic fighting continued until afternoon, with reinforcement troops deployed.
Cruz said seven soldiers and four militants were initially killed.
Three government troops and two rebels also were wounded, but one of the soldiers later died while being evacuated, raising the military’s death toll to eight, said army spokesman Major Harold Cabunoc.
Officials said the militants belong to the same group that ambushed a truckload of rubber plantation workers in Sumisip two weeks ago. Five farm workers of the Tumahubong Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Integrated Cooperative (TARBIDC) and one government militiaman were killed in that attack, while 22 others were wounded.
Cabangbang said that before the clash on Thursday, the troops were pursuing the group of suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits who attacked a military detachment securing the rubber planters’ cooperative in Upper Cabengbeng, Sumisip. No casualty was reported.
The attack on Wednesday was the bandits’ retaliation to the July 20 clash in the boundary of Sapah Bulak and Upper Cabengbeng villages, Sumisip, where the military have recovered an M-16 Armalite rifle and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.
Cabangbang said the leader of the suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits that clashed with the troops on Thursday morning was identified as Wyms Wakil.
Wakil was a former official of TARBIDC but was fired for wrongdoing and is allegedly out to avenge his termination from work.
Violence in the southern Philippines continues despite efforts by U.S.-trained Philippine forces to put an end to decades of bombings and ransom kidnappings by Muslim extremists in the predominantly Christian nation.
Philippine offensives have weakened the militants but they remain a threat. They are holding several foreign hostages, apparently to use ransom money to buy food and weapons.
