102 flights remain cancelled, Philippine Airlines says

MANILA—At least 102 flights of national carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) remain cancelled on Wednesday after authorities averted further shutdown of operations due to sudden work stoppage of ground employees.
Sixty-two of these flights are domestic while 40 are international, PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna said in a statement. The complete list of flights is available at www.philippineairlines.com.
Villaluna explained it will take some time for PAL’s operations to fully normalize but the airline is determined to get “back on its feet and move forward.”
“We thank our passengers for their patience and understanding and for bearing with us during this difficult time. Rest assured that PAL will do everything to ensure that all our passengers will reach their destination safely,” she said.
PAL has deployed two US-bound flights, three regional and two domestic flights late last night up to early Wednesday.
The flights include the following: Manila-Davao (PR821); Manila-Kalibo (PR239); Manila-Hong Kong (PR310); Manila-Bangkok (PR732); Manila-Los Angeles (PR102); Manila-San Francisco (PR104); Manila-Jakarta (PR535).
The flight deployment came hours after 300 striking members of the PAL Employees Association (Palea) vacated their posts, thereby allowing PAL volunteers to take over their functions.
Some 2,600 workers belonging to the catering, passenger handling and call center reservation are set to be outsourced by the airline as part of its cost-cutting program.
A composite team from PAL security, airport services, police and aviation security and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) was able to persuade striking Palea workers to yield control of PAL’s check in terminals, cargo, catering, and ramp areas.
Hundreds of PAL volunteers were deployed at PAL’s hub in NAIA Terminal 2 either as check in clerks, ramp equipment operators or customer relations officers to ensure continuity of operations, Villaluna said. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
