Two Filipino witnesses fail to turn up to inquest

Two witnesses from the National Bureau of Investigation in The Philippines failed to appear on Thursday at the Hong Kong inquest into last year’s Manila hostage crisis.
The inquest is investigating the deaths of eight Hongkongers killed on August 23 last year, when their bus was hijacked by sacked policemen Rolando Mendoza.
Coronerβs Officer Jat Sew-tong SC said the court had only received verbal agreements β but no written confirmations from the pair.
Jat told the court that as many as nine Filipino witnesses might give evidence on Friday. But he said the court had also not yet received written confirmations of their attendance.
He said the inquest β which was expected to run for 25 days β would have its last day of hearing evidence on Friday.
Jat acknowledged that there were still some witnesses willing to testify. But he said he expected the court would only hear evidence for one more day.
On Friday, the jury will also hear submissions from lawyer Hector Pun Hei, who represents Tse Chi-kin β the elder brother of tour guide Masa Tse Ting-chunn.
Coroner Michael Chan Pik-kiu will then sum up the evidence. The jury is expected to reach a verdict early next week.
The inquest has finished listening to evidence for Thursday.
