Public warned vs fake narcotics agents

March 23, 2011

THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Tuesday warned the public against persons posing as members or agents of the anti-drug groups, fraudulently using the agencyโ€™s name to soliciting funds from government and private offices.
PDEA Director General Jose S. Gutierrez Jr. reiterated the warning amid numerous reports reaching the PDEA National Headquarters about the nefarious activities of groups such as the Philippine Anti-Drug Support Group Inc. led by a certain Police Supt. Romeo Valdez Bello.
Their phony scheme undertakes โ€œsolicitationsโ€ through incessant calls asking for donations, or purchase of at least five tickets worth P5,000 each and to be deposited to an undisclosed bank.
Gutierrez said that the group is committing an act of grave misrepresentation that are not in any way sanctioned or supported by PDEA.
They are directly violating Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) Board Resolution No. 34, series of 2006, which stipulates Guidelines Governing the Accreditation of Various Organizations Involved in Drug Abuse Prevention Programs, because they are not duly accredited by the DDB.
Moreover, Section VI, sub-paragraph (4) of the Resolution states that โ€œAccreditation is not an authorization to solicit funds.โ€
PDEA will not hesitate to arrest and charge those who malign the good name and reputation of the agency, Gutierrez said.
According to the PDEA chief, the best way to avoid being victimized by such criminals is through vigilance and adherence to strict security procedures in all government and private facilities.
Appropriate identification or court orders must be demanded by security personnel to help curb any unfortunate events. He also encourages the public to coordinate with PDEA for proper identification of its personnel through the following PDEA Hotlines: 920-0735 and 920-0736.
