Group, parishes express opposition vs RH bill

March 22, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The church group Families Against Reproductive Health (RH) Bill and various parishes in Pampanga and Angeles City expressed their opposition to the controversial measure on Monday.
The group staged a provincial call for action against the proposed bill by posting anti-RH bill stickers and distributing pamphlets to church goers since Sunday until Monday morning.
The group’s move came in line with the synchronized call of priests from various parishes here to those who are opposed to the bill, to express their position in a planned gathering on March 27 at Villa del Sol here where hundreds of anti-RH bill supporters will stage a prayer rally.
Myra Manabat, the group’s focal person for San Fernando, said they have been informing people about the “real score” that the RH bill is promoting.
“Most people are not even aware of the dangers of the RH bill and what it can do to the Filipino family. We try to give as much awareness as possible and gather support among the Catholic community,” Manabat said.
She said they believe that the children are most affected by the bill, thus they are pushing for the natural family planning method, instead of the RH, which is an anti-life program that promotes abortion.
Pampanga priests from different parishes in Sto. Tomas, Minalin, Angeles City and the City of San Fernando have also reportedly spoken out against the proposed bill just before the end of their masses on Sunday.
Some churchgoers were also seen wearing anti-RH bill stickers and shirts. A signature campaign has also been launched to gather million of signatures against the RH bill.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) called on President Benigno Aquino III on Sunday to reconsider his support on the controversial bill.
Archbishop Paciano Aniceto, CBCP Episcopal Commission on Family and Life (ECFL) chairman, said being elected by a predominantly Catholic population makes Aquino responsible to hear their opinions.
Albay Representative Edcel Lagman, principal author of House Bill 4244 or the “Responsible Parenthood, Reproductive Health and Population and Development Act of 2011,” said the country needs an RH law to protect and promote the basic right of parents to freely and responsibly plan the number and spacing of their children; to lower the incidence of abortion by preventing unplanned, mistimed and unwanted pregnancies; to enhance the ability of the Philippines to meet the Millennium Development Goals; and to buttress the country’s anti-poverty agenda, among others.
The House leader said the RH measure goes beyond simple family planning because its expansive coverage includes, among others, maternal, infant and child health and nutrition, including breastfeeding; prevention of HIV-Aids and other STDs; elimination of violence against women; youth RH and sexuality education; and male responsibility and participation in reproductive health.
