Archbishop: We’re against RH bill, not Aquino

March 22, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said Monday that he and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) are not against President Benigno Aquino III but the Reproductive Health (RH) bill, which MalacaΓ±ang reportedly “favors.”
Aniceto, CBCP’s chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Family and Life, led a press conference at the Chancery of the Arsobizpado here. With the pro-life prelate were Auxiliary Bishop Roberto Mallari, Fr. Mark Manabat, Sister Josephine Nepomuceno, Archdiocesan Council of the Laity president Banjo Serrano, Association of Laborers and Employees party-list Representative Catalina Bagasina and other pro-life and anti RH-Bill proponents.
“We are not against Noynoy. In fact, I voted for him. We are not against senators and congressmen but against the RH bill, which they are pushing. You see, it is just a matter of prioritization. Mas maraming dapat gawin like the immediate promotion of health, programs for dengue and TB and ridding the government of corruption,” said Aniceto.
The prelate also said that since the bill is now in Congress’s agenda, a better understanding of it on a global perspective must be made known to the public, Christians and non-Christians alike.
Bishop Mallari corroborated Aniceto’s pronouncements, saying everyone, especially couples, must have a very clear understanding of the controversial bill.
“What is really the church’s stand on the RH bill? This is what we want people to know. Ours is an expression of conviction which we want to impart to families,” Mallari said.
Bagasina, for her part, said she is one of the representatives opposing the bill.
Serrano and members of the council, meanwhile, poised some challenges before supporters of the bill.
“We vehemently object to this bill because it is inhumane, immoral, corrupt and unacceptable. We challenge them to draw from their faith, which we similarly draw our cause from,” said Serrano, adding the council is now coordinating with other religious sectors, including Muslims, to boost the one million signature campaign to thwart the bill’s passage.
Dr. Reynaldo Espiritu of the Couples for Christ and William Suarez, chairman of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, both challenged women solons, including the Philippine Medical Society and the Department of Health, to “look into” the ill effects — like cervical cancer and hypertension — of the bill before they stamp their final approval.
