Expert says most bullets were fired from outside hijacked bus
Mar 02, 2011
A ballistics expert on Wednesday said that most of the bullets that struck a Hong Kong tour bus during last yearโs Manila hostage siege were fired from outside the vehicle.
Superintendent Raymond Chan Siu-kei was testifying before a Coronerโs Court inquest into the deaths of eight Hongkongers who were held hostage by gunman Rolando Mendoza last August.
Chan told the inquest he had identified and analysed 62 bullet marks on the exterior of the bus. Of these, 32 were shot from firearms outside of the bus, 10 were fired inside and three hit the side mirrors.
The trajectory of the 17 remaining bullets could not be determined by the analysis, Chan said.
Most of the bullet marks on the bus were on the vehicleโs windscreen and front door, the inquest heard.
Hong Kong ballistics experts travelled to Manila a week after the siege had come to a tragic end. They intended to collect evidence from the bus in which the eight were killed, but items had been moved or were missing when they made their inspection.
The inquest will continue on Wednesday afternoon before Coroner Michael Chan Pik-kiu.
