Tests fail to prove all hostage victims shot by gunman

Bullet fragments from eight Hongkongers killed during last year’s tour bus siege in the Philippines could not conclusively prove whether they were shot by gunman Rolando Mendoza โ or by Manila police, an inquest was told on Thursday.
Ballistics expert Superintendent Raymond Chan Siu-kei told the Coronerโs Court he had collected 109 bullet fragments and cartridge cases from the bus.
Chan said he had conducted tests based on information from 55 M16 rifles and 66 9x19mm pistols given to him by Manila police. He also tested Mendozaโs M16 rifle and 0.45mm pistol.
Chan found bullet fragments from M16 rifles in the bodies of five of the eight dead Hong Kong people. But he said he could not determine which rifle fired the shots. No bullet fragments were found in the other three bodies, the inquest heard.
Chan also identified six fragments and cartridge cases of bullets shot from an unidentified 0.45mm pistol.
He said these bullets did not come from Mendozaโs gun.
Chan also said the victims were probably shot from a distance of at least 16 inches.
The inquest before Coroner Michael Chan Pik-kiu will continue on Thursday afternoon.
