Pampanga mayor is new development council’s chief

March 9, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — President Benigno Aquino III has appointed this city’s Mayor Oscar Rodriguez as the new chief of Central Luzon’s development council.

Rodriguez, also president of the League of Cities of the Philippines, has been appointed to head the Regional Development Council (RDC) over the weekend.

“As long as it is for public service, I don’t turn down the position given to me,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez has relieved Bataan Governor Enrique Garcia from the position.

The Kapampagan mayor is one of the five city mayors recently appointed by Aquino to be regional development chairman. RDC chiefs are usually governors.

The other four were Dipolog City Mayor Evelyn Uy (Zamboanga Peninsula), Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz (Northern Mindanao), Davao City Mayor Sarah Duterte (Davao region), and General Santos City Mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio (Soccsksargen).

Rodriguez assured he will pursue infrastructure developments like the North Rail System, roads toward provinces of Aurora and Quezon and developments of seaports in Aurora and Subic, Zambales.
“After developing all of the region’s potentials in terms of infrastructure, no region can compete with us,” Rodriguez said.

The RDC is the highest policy-making body in the region and serves as the counterpart of the National Economic and Development Board at the sub-national level.

It is the primary institution that coordinates and sets the direction of all economic and social development efforts in the region. It also serves as a forum where local efforts can be related and integrated with national development activities.

The council is composed of local chief executives, regional directors of National Government agencies and representatives of the private sector. (Charlene Cayabyab)
