Grenade found in Pampanga school
March 5, 2011
MABALACAT — A fragmentation grenade was found inside a public elementary school here on Friday morning, police said.
SPO2 Jose Almeda, commander of the Mawaque Resettlement Center police detachment, said a janitor found the explosive at an open space inside the Sapang Bibas Elementary School.
According to Almeda, the blasting pin of the grenade is still intact.
“Medyo rusty na yung granada pero pwede pa rin sumabog yun,” Almeda said.
Students were not evacuated and classes in the school were not suspended because the explosive was quickly turned over to a unit of the Philippine Army (PA), temporarily dispatched near the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) to protect motorists, Almeda said.
Rebel groups may have hidden the grenade in the area during the 1980s, some residents said.
