Zobel de Ayala to receive HAU honorary doctorate

ANGELES CITY — Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, concurrent chairman and CEO of the country’s largest and oldest conglomerate — the Ayala Corporation, will receive the degree Doctor of Science (Management), honoris causa, from the Holy Angel University.
The award will be conferred on March 15 at the University Theatre.
Popularly known as “Jaza”, Zobel is also the chairman of Globe Telecom, Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), and Integrated Microelectronics Inc. He is also vice chairman of the Ayala Land Inc., Manila Water Co., and Ayala Foundation Inc., among other positions.
Aside from his responsibilities on the boards of the Ayala Group companies, Zobel is a member of various international and local business and socio-civic organizations, and is the Philippine representative to the APEC Business Advisory Council. He also chairs the World Wildlife Fund’s Philippine Advisory Council.
In a recent FinanceAsia poll of more than 300 Asian investors and analysts, Zobel was chosen as the best CEO in the Philippines with Ayala Corporation as the country’s best managed company, best in corporate governance and best in corporate social responsibility.
Last year, MalacaΓ±ang awarded him a Presidential Medal of Merit “for enhancing the prestige and honor of the Republic of the Philippines,” and the Philippine Legion of Honor (with rank of Grand Commander) in recognition of his outstanding public service record. He was named one of the country’s Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of 1999.
Zobel graduated Bachelor of Arts, major in Economics, with honors, from Harvard College in 1981. He acquired his Masters in Business Administration degree in 1987 from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.
“The university is recognizing Mr. Zobel for his inspired leadership of a corporation that has lasted 177 years and still remains the most successful, vibrant, best-managed company in the Philippines today,” HAU president Dr. Arlyn S. Villanueva said.
“Ayala Corporation has been around since the birth of the nation, affecting every aspect of the life of every Filipino, from real estate to banking to telecommunications to water distribution,” Dr. Villanueva said. “And its corporate social responsibility extends to education, culture and the arts, environment and poverty alleviation.”
The university president added that Zobel’s HAU honorary doctorate is significant for HAU “because Javier Nepomuceno, our founder’s eldest son who convinced his father to open the school in 1933, also played an important role in the expansion of the Ayala Corporation back in the 1960s.”
